The average person just wants to look good in the mirror, feel good as they go through their life, and stay as healthy as possible.  Others want to lose weight and just get healthier. Yet others want to  improve performance in athletics or take time off their race.

We can help you do all of these at Littleton Balanced Healthcare.

VO2 Testing to lose weight or improve your performance(see below)

RMR Testing to find your personalized and actual calorie burn rate per day

Fat Analysis to find out what percentage of your body is fat:  before you start a new diet and exercise program and to monitor your success

Energy Balance

The body gains or loses fat based on energy balance.  This refers to the balance between calories taken in as food or drink and energy expenditure (metabolic rate).  You can use an equation to calculate this, but it is wrong about 40% of the time.  If you happen to be right at the average, it works.  If you want to know your individual resting metabolic rate, now we have the test available at a reasonable cost.  It is often covered by insurance if you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar or diabetes.  It might be covered if you have arthritis and are overweight.

If you want to lose weight, you have to expend more calories than you take in.  If you indulge one day, we can show you how to make up for it in the next few days – - – and stay right on track.  We can create a custom individualized plan based on your personal metabolism, medical information and family history.  Dr Parent-Kenney works with a registered dietician and exercise physiologist and has training herself in personal training and endurance training.  She believes first in mental well-being and then caring for the body so it serves you well during this lifetime.

Since Dr Parent-Kenney believes you should be doing some form of exercise regardless of your disease process or diagnosis, she will work with you to accommodate special circumstances.

Resting Metabolic Rate(RMR)

Metabolic Rate or your metabolism is simply your “calorie burn rate”.  Knowing your metabolic rate is vital for weight loss.

Energy expenditure can be divided into three different groups.

Resting Calories–Calories that are burned while the body is at rest.  70-75% of all calories are burned just living, without moving—breathing, cell functioning etc.

Activities of Daily Living Calories—Calories burned because of normal daily activities such as walking, working, and caring for self or others.

Exercise Calories—These are calories burned during “exercise”, usually meaning intentional movement or work of the body to strengthen the muscles and/or heart.  Many people get a lot of exercise in their normal daily activities.  Others do not.

The sum total of these is your Metabolism or total calories burned.

VO2 Testing

We do this test by putting a heart rate monitor around your chest and a mask over your face to get your measurements while you exercise.  VO2 is the rate of oxygen uptake measured during exercise.  VO2 max is the ultimate measure of fitness and is reported in milliliters of oxygen per kg of body weight.  To achieve a high VO2 max, a person must have a fit heart and lungs and significant lean muscle mass that is well conditioned.

Dr Parent-Kenney does VO2 testing and uses this information to find your anaerobic threshold and maximum heart rate.  She can then use this information to help guide you to exercise more efficiently—to burn more fat at your “fat burning zone” or to improve your performance running, biking, playing soccer, climbing mountains etc.
